Violence is now globally recognised as a public health issue. Since women and girls all over the world are particularly vulnerable to violence, it needs to be considered as a gender issue. There are changes happening at the regional, national, and international level to extend healthcare response to different forms of violence. This article explores the prevalence of violence, and its effect on women in India. While considering the Indian legal and socio-economic context, it also discusses current practices among healthcare professionals.Effective and innovative models to engage the health sector on VAW have been described in this paper.
