Sexual violence has significant negative impact on the physical and psychological health of survivor, who often seek medical assistance at a health facility. Comprehensive and gender-sensitive health care is essential to provide immediate care and assistance as well as to aid survivor’s recovery. Healthcare providers are expected to document and collect evidence regarding the assault, which is crucial for the prosecution. Additionally, the health sector can act as an important referral point for other services that the survivor may need, such as social welfare and legal aid. This course is therefore designed to highlight the pivotal role and responsibilities of healthcare providers in responding to sexual survivors of sexual assault. It equips health professionals to carry out therapeutic and forensic responsibilities vis-a-vis new laws, formulating unbiased medical opinion, documentation of findings, court trials and debate tricky areas pertaining to informed and specific consent, mandatory reporting, etc. The course adopts a participatory pedagogy with skill building exercises through case studies, role plays and group discussions.
