One of the most common forms of Gender-Based Violence is Rape. Yet there is a dearth of Indian evidence on the impact of rape on survivors.
An empirical study conducted by CEHAT, comprising of 66 interviews of survivors across different age groups and socio-economic classes. The study was carried out in the period (2016 – 2018) post amendments to the Rape laws. It documents their experiences vis a vis different systems as well as its impact on their health, relationships and work. Findings of the study bring to forth deep rooted victim blaming attitudes amongst different stake holders and how they impede survivor’s access to justice. Recommendations by survivors strongly suggest a need to re-conceptualise services for survivors to heal from rape as well as to seek justice.
