This paper is based on National Family Health Survey-II (1898-99) data and is intended to provide an indirect assessment of the magnitude of induced abortion practice within marriage in India in order to attain the desired sex composition of children and to avoid unplanned pregnancies This paper also highlights the high level of use of abortions as a contraceptive method in the country and the serious implications for health policy in general and women's well being in particular.
