Engendering medical education- TOT Workshop at Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal - 4th to 6th July 2024

From July 4th to 6th, 2024, CEHAT hosted a workshop on Engendering Medical Education in collaboration with Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal. The three-day event focused on exploring gender norms, roles, stereotypes, and their significant impact on health, with the ultimate goal of promoting more inclusive and equitable medical education and learning.

The workshop began with an introductory session where the CEHAT team welcomed delegates and facilitated introductions. Renowned resource persons such as Dr. Arjun Jakasania, Dr. Harshal Sathe, and Anchal Narang led the sessions, utilizing adult learning techniques and participatory methods to engage participants deeply. The workshop was attended by post-graduate students of Community Medicine from various medical colleges across the state of Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh. The key topics covered were the fundamental concepts of Sex and Gender, Social Determinants of Health, MTP, Unique needs of LGBTQIA+, Gender-based Violence, Family planning and contraception, and gender and mental health. Through activities like the Faces Exercise, Power Walk, Spiders Web exercise, PowerPoint presentations, and the review of textbook quotes and policy documents, attendees thoroughly understood these concepts and their implications in medical practice.

The workshop also focused on enhancing facilitation skills and exploring different approaches to integrating gender into undergraduate (UG) teaching. Through group work and discussions, participants learned new methodologies and techniques for teaching gender perspectives to UG students. The workshop concluded with sessions on teaching gender-integrated modules and working with mentors. Participants examined revised competencies issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC) familiarized themselves with the gender-integrated MBBS curriculum and discussed steps for teaching gender perspectives to medical students. The final session involved presentations of lesson plans by participants, reflections, feedback, and a valedictory function, where participants shared their insights and discussed the way forward.

Participants were asked to share the key things they learned from the training. A few participants responded, “The session was very well conducted”, “Power work is the best way to understand the topic”, and “Enriching sessions, Beautiful showing the spectrum of gender equality. “Participants rated their overall experience for the three days as highly satisfying. They appreciated the efforts of CEHAT in organizing the workshop and found the content presented to be highly relevant and useful for their professional development. Overall, the CEHAT workshop on "Engendering Medical Education" was a resounding success, providing participants with valuable knowledge and practical skills to address gender issues in healthcare.
