CEHAT collaborated with BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad, and the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM), Gujarat Chapter, to organize a Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop for medical educators from October 15-17, 2024. Thirty medical educators from various colleges across Gujarat participated in the workshop.
On the first day, Renu Khanna conducted two sessions covering fundamental concepts such as the difference between sex and gender, and discussions on gender norms, roles, stereotypes, and intersectionality. She also led the session on "Understanding Gender as a Social Determinant of Health," which examined how gender influences health disparities and healthcare access. Later in the day, Kartika Gore facilitated the session on "Unveiling the Unique Health Needs of LGBTQIA+ Communities." Both speakers used participatory activities and real-world examples to make the sessions engaging and relevant
Second day began with U. Vindhya leading a session on gender and mental health, which explored gender disparities in mental health and discussed revised competencies issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC) post the Madras High Court judgment. This was followed by a session on gender-based violence (GBV), where Vindhya emphasized the health consequences of GBV and the therapeutic and medico-legal responses to domestic violence, utilizing the LIVES approach. The day's final session, conducted by the CEHAT team, focused on "Debating Family Planning and Contraception Use in India," highlighting unmet contraceptive needs among diverse populations.
The third day, Sangeeta Rege conducted a session on "Understanding Intersections of Gender and Disability," which unpacked the complexities of how gender and disability intersect and discussed disability-related competencies in the undergraduate medical curriculum. After this, Dr. Manisha Goyal facilitated a session on how to integrate gender perspectives while teaching the AETCOM (Attitude, Ethics, and Communication) module. This was followed by a dedicated session on integrating gender in teaching undergraduate (UG) students by Dr. Manisha and Dr. Shikha, where they discussed how to integrate gender in UG teaching. In the final part of the day, participants prepared and presented lesson plans, showcasing how they would incorporate gender perspectives into their lesson plans.
The workshop concluded with reflections and a valedictory function, marking the end of an impactful three-day event. The training set a strong foundation for future initiatives aimed at fostering gender-sensitive medical education in Gujarat.
