Evidence-building on the phenomenon of labour room violence in India has not gained much traction. Existing data assess the prevalence rates of abusive behaviours from women’s standpoint. Instead, CEHAT focused on healthcare providers’ perspectives on the mistreatment of women in the labour room, with the ultimate aim of changing practices in labour rooms. The study revealed abusive practices are deeply entrenched in the healthcare system. The Healthcare providers unanimously rejected the term labour room violence and justified acts like restraining women, shouting and scolding women as necessary for better birth outcomes.
